Perfume is an electro-pop girl group from Hiroshima, Japan. They debuted locally in 2001 and made their transition to a major label in 2005. As of January 2012, the group has released fourteen major label singles on the Tokuma Japan Communications label.

Since 2003, Perfume has been produced by Yasutaka Nakata, founder of the group Capsule and the Contemode label. It was around this time in 2003 that the group's original post-Shibuya-kei sound began making a transition to electronic dance-pop music, influenced by 1980s synthpop and chiptunes, and incorporating Auto-Tune, vocoders and electro house. Following their mainstream breakthrough around 2007, their success inspired other female acts such as Aira Mitsuki, immi, Mizca, SAWA, Saori@destiny and Sweet Vacation to incorporate electropop music.

Perfume - Fake It (PV)
Play It!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Perfume is the best electro-group in the world. I wrote a post about them years back, but since the post is outdated and they've released a whole bunch of new material, here they are again. And as all Perfume fans will tell you (me included), you can never get enough of their addictive electro-pop. Their music is like drugs, except you don’t have to give it up, it isn’t bad for you and it’s for your ears. And yes, you may not understand what they’re saying unless you speak Japanese, but you’ll soon realize that in no way makes their music less enjoyable, or addictive for that matter.

If you give any of their songs a listen, you should immediately understand what makes these girls so awesome. Why their debut album topped the Oricon charts at number 1 in Japan and in several other countries and has been certified platinum along with their two other albums. They’ve released hit single after hit single and have released a live DVD that has also been certified platinum. Then there’s the highly successful tours they’ve embarked on and their awesomely cute choreographed music videos which have each racked millions of view on youtube. People sure do love Perfume and so should you.

A large majority of the group’s music fall’s under the electro-pop category and this group does it like no one else. Their brand of electro-pop is upbeat, cute, super infectious, high layered and produced by one of the best electronic producers in the world. The take away from every one of their songs should be amazing choruses, catchy refrains, and if you have a good ear, simple yet effective melodies that expand into complex counter melodies and harmonies. The girls voices are subjected to auto-tune, but it works with the music and helps blend them into the dense music layers. It’s executed well enough so it doesn't sound annoying or distract from the actual music. In their more recent releases, the auto-tune is scaled back and allows for their individual voices to better shine through.

Producer Yasutaka Nakata can be described as the unofficial 4th member in the group. His involvement is an integral part of Perfume’s sound and success. He takes credit under the title of producer and takes responsibility for the production and composition of the music. Within Perfume, his style of electro-pop uses multiples layers. Everything from fat basses, synths, piano’s, claps, processed guitars, drums, rises, glitches, and bubbling sounds. Every now and then, he deviates from the  electro-pop genre and uses elements from techno (Electro-world), disco, R&B, and progressive electronica (edge).

One of his Nakata's compositional touches is his use of polyrythms in the music or staccato vocal patterns. The bridge in Polythrythm or a song like Laser beam show the awesome technique in practice. Since his work with Capsule and Perfume, he’s established himself as one of the top electronic producers in japan and has worked with numerous other artists who’s albums and singles have topped the charts.

If there is one definite Perfume album to check out and that everyone will love, it has to be their debut, Game. Every song on that album is amazing. You can listen to it without skipping a single track. Their most recent album JPN is also great. Their sophomore album, Delta however is just good. It has it’s share of awesome songs, but it is a weaker album then Game Or JPN. Either way all Perfume albums are worth checking out. Their highly anticipated 4th album is expected to be out sometime in 2013. They've already 2 new singles so it’s also a matter of time till the new album is officially announced. And if one thing is certain, it’s that the new album is going to be amazing and that the group will continue to get bigger and bigger.
